Digital Credentials for Europe
Enabling citizens’ to have full control of their personal data, with a high level of trust and cross-border recognition.
DC4EU provides tangible support to the public and private sectors in the educational and social security domains by deploying and accessing state-of-the-art trans-European interoperable digital service infrastructures and their integration in a cross-border trust framework.
DC4EU aims to apply the European Union’s eIDAS trust framework focusing on the education and social security fields. DC4EU will investigate the issuance of educational credentials and professional qualifications in the education sector and the issuance of the Portable Document A1, and the European Health Insurance Card in the social security sector.
DC4EU will support cross-border, large-scale piloting of the European Digital Identity Wallet in compliance with the EU Toolbox process. DC4EU will develop four (4) use cases where we test interoperability and scalability in the national domain and multiple cross-border contexts to provide feedback to the European Commission and Member States for iterative updates.
DC4EU involves 80 relevant institutions from 22 countries backed by 43 public organizations and 49 private entities., including wallet issuing organizations, credential issuers and involving various Qualified Trust Service Providers and authentic sources to allow comprehensive testing of the wallet using Qualified Electronic Attestations of Attributes and credentials.

The EU Digital Identity Wallet is a collaboration between the EU institutions and the Member States. Member states will be legally obligated to provide a wallet to all citizens, residents, and businesses by 2026.
The wallets will be a secure and easy way to prove who you are when accessing digital services, as well as store and share important digital documents about yourself. Privacy will always be respected; you control what data is shared and who has access to it.
Head to the European Commission’s EU Digital Identity Wallet website to learn more about the project; including its benefits and how the wallet will work, details on the regulation behind the project, info on the Large Scale Pilot projects test-driving the wallets, and the technical specifications making it all possible, plus more.
